‘The High Cost of A Half Truth’

Acts 5:1-11

Sermon Overview:

Acts 5:1–11 presents one of the most sobering moments in the early church. Ananias and Sapphira attempt to present part of their offering as if it were the whole, seeking the appearance of devotion without the reality of it. Their sin is not withholding money—Peter makes that clear. Their sin is deception, image‑management, and lying to the Holy Spirit.

The contrast with Barnabas in Acts 4:36–37 is intentional. Barnabas embodies authentic generosity; Ananias and Sapphira embody performative spirituality. God responds decisively, not because of the amount given, but because hypocrisy threatens the very foundation of a Spirit‑formed community.

The passage teaches that God takes truth seriously, and the cost of a half‑truth is far higher than we imagine. It damages trust, corrupts our witness, and invites judgment.
